Morris Birds Nests & Egg Prints

Morris Birds Nests & Egg Prints
Second Edition c. 1870-71
Size approximately 6" by 9-3/4"
NEW SECTION June 2007

These charming prints with a single egg "floating" above each nest are popularly known as Morris Nests and Eggs. They are among the best images of a Second Edition (1870-71) of A Natural History of the Nests and Eggs of British Birds, with the text by the Rev. Francis O. Morris, R. A. Morris collaborated with printer Benjamin Fawcett and several engravers, including Alexander Lydon, to create this series. Some 223 prints were produced, in three volumes. They were color printed from up to four separate wood blocks on heavy, fine quality paper, and finished by hand coloring. Each measures approximately 6" by 9-3/4" and is in very good condition, unless especially noted. A photocopy of the title page will be furnished.

The selection shown here was carefully chosen for their nearly-uniform very pale taupe (grayish-beige) background so that a pleasing grouping could be matted and framed together. Our eBay auction offerings of the Morris plates will note which edition and which color background the auction item is from, so that buyers may select items compatible with their other purchases. We have added this NEW section of Second Edition Morris Nests & Egg prints with a nearly uniform taupe background in early June 2007. There is a separate section of First Edition Morris Nests & Egg prints with a nearly-uniform very pale green background, as well. The First Edition was printed in 1853-56 (see our other Section of Morris Nests). Later editions were issued 1870-71, 1875, 1892 and 1896, some in revised form with a few additional plates. The 1896 editon was as revised by William B. Tegetmeier with 248 colored plates. Within each edition, and indeed within each volume of a given edition, the backgrounds were variously green, beige, gray or taupe.

Although some of the 2nd edition taupe background nests have been sold, in August 2011 we have set aside a full duplicate set of these same prints, from another 2nd edition with a lighter beige background. Please inquire as to which are still available, at: bgillgeohse@aol.com
