Maud Humphrey
MAUD HUMPHREY
Baby's Record c. 1898
Size approx. 8-l/4" by 10-3/4"
These charming chromolithographs of babies and very small children
in various activities are illustrations by Maud Humphrey (mother of Humphrey
Bogart) which were published by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, in
1898 as part of the Baby's Record new parents could purchase to record
the progress of the new arrival. Especially pleasing are the ones entitled
"First Birthday," "First Christmas" and "First Valentine." Although a dozen
illustrations were done, many books only contained a random four or five
of the group. We are pleased to have eight of the nicest ones on offer here.
Each print measures approximately 8-l/4" by 10-3/4"". They are on heavy
paper, with no text on the reverse side. One edge may be very uneven where
it was detached from the book; but the margins are generous, and this will
not affect framing.
Maud Humphrey, who has a following of avid collectors for her children's books
and calendars, also did commercial art for Mellins Baby Food and others. Other
well-known books include Maud Humphrey's Mother Goose, published New York
and London, 1891, and The Bride's Book, with four large chromolithograph color
illustrations, published also by Stokes, New York, in 1900.
