Botanicals - Anne Pratt Ferns

Anne Pratt Ferns
Step Edition, c. 1899-1900
Size approximately 6-1/8" by 9-1/2"

The BEST of Anne Pratt! This work is entitled The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges & Ferns of Great Britain, with the plants drawn by Anne Pratt (1806-93) a grocer's daughter from Kent, and professionally redrawn on stone by the artists of the firm of W. Dickes & Co. Originally published in six volumes in 1855 by The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (S.P.C.K.), the work was revised by Edward Step and published by Frederick Warne & Co. in a New Edition of four volumes (1899-1900). Volume Four, represented here, is comprised of the grasses and ferns. Unlike the more prolific works of E.J. Lowe (showing hundreds of ferns from around the world), the Pratt series is limited to some 41 rich deep green chromolithographic plates. The some two dozen very best images shown here from the Step edition can easily be grouped to make pairs and sets. They are printed on heavy stock paper measuring approximately 6-1/8" by 9-1/2," with the verso blank. One edge may be ragged where it was removed from the book, but this will not affect framing. Each print bears both the common English and the scientific Latin names of the particular fern. A photocopy of the title page will accompany your purchase.

A small selection of the remaining prints from this set will appear in our Fall 2006 "ladycavalier" eBay auctions.

NOTE - about matting and framing. We do not do framing. Our mats are made for us in England by several firms, using Ph neutral mount board (which will not harm your print) hand drawn lines, and attractive marble paper. Our markup from the price we pay is nominal. Occasionally, as here, we may offer a small number of these decorative mats for sale, but only WITH THE PURCHASE OF A CORRESPONDING PRINT. We have set aside six mats only for this series, as shown on Plate 299 in the last row of such prints, at a price of $72.00 each. Please email us if you wish to purchase mats to accompany your print purchases.
